One of the most importat Swedish poet, Gustaf Fröding, used to walk often. Either through medical recommendation to improve one's mental health or just by feeling the connection with nature. For me, he describes his aesthetic experiences after a hike in his poem I Skogen (In the Forest).
In recent years, everyday walks have become an important part of my art practice. Walking in nature every day is a ritual where I meditate and focus on the body and mind to be present 'here and now'. As Fröding reflected on the poem, I am more aware of what nature provides: the song of the birds, the colors of the fallen leaves, the shape of the trees, the beauty of the light in the forest…
Inspired by Fröding's mysticism and spiritual outlook on life, I want to bring the introspective feelings created by walking in the woods to Alsters Herrgård by building a labyrinth with forest trees. For thousands of years, labyrinths have been used to facilitate an inner journey where you can reflect, meditate, or let your thoughts fly. It also stands as a symbol of finding oneself and helps me feel grounded. Walking the labyrinth has a positive impact on well-being in terms of mood, stress, and emotions. They are the same benefits as walking in the woods. In the labyrinth, I want nature to grow wild, uncut. A place in the garden where the public can wander, meditate, play and, simply, enjoy. A place where, as Fröding wrote, "Du banar dig fram, du växer, du höjer dig fot för fot." (You make your way forward, you grow, you raise yourself step by step.)
